A Slash of Scarlet
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (June, 1993)
Authors: Nancy Baker Jacobs and Julie Rubenstein
Average review score:

Absorbing and suspenseful!
As I commented in my review of THE TURQUOISE TATTOO, Ms. Jacobs is one of those rare writers who can make her readers feel as if they are actually on the case with Devon MacDonald. Devon is an appealingly real private detective. She and Sam Sherman make a great team!

Be sure to read the other two novels in the series, THE TURQUOISE TATTOO and THE SILVER SCAPEL, as well as any other of Ms. Jacobs' fine suspense novels.

Social Problems: A Critical Thinking Approach
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (February, 1998)
Authors: Paul J. Baker, Louise E. Anderson, Dean S. Dorn, and Louis E. Anderson
Average review score:

wonderful introduction
More of a primer on critical thinking than simply a textbook on social problems, Dorn, Anderson and Baker have created a eminently useful and rewarding collection of excercises and articles in this newest edition of their popular text.

While this book was never used in any classes I took, I did take an undergraduate critical thinking class in the Sociology department at CSU Sacramento at the same time that Dean Dorn was teaching there. I think he integrated some of what Andy Hiken, who taught that class, used; the structured and extensive frameworks for critical thinking excercises and other bits and pieces of the curriculum. I have read this text and others that use a similar model and find that the Dorn/Baker/Anderson book is useful, rewarding and especially interesting for use in an undergraduate environment.

Average review score:

A powerful introduction to software process improvement
An unusual book in that it combines practical ideas, with non-standard approaches and theoretical studies in order to provide practitioners with an up-to-date tretament of software process quality issues, tools and methods. The book will be usefull both to practitioners, already involved in Software Process Improvement, and newcomers looking for ideas and directions. The authors successfully combine practical experience with software engineering methodologies to produce both a reference and a practical guide.

Spelling Doodle Loops: Creative Activities for Beginning Readers
Published in Paperback by Good Apple (April, 1996)
Author: Sandy Baker
Average review score:

Book Provides Excellent Supplementary Spelling Activities
I am very pleased with the Doodle Loops Spelling: Creative Activities for Beginning Readers. It provides the extra practice so many children need, in a format that makes them feel successful. The word family approach is a great supplement to any spelling/reading program, and teachers or parents can choose the activities from the book that compliment the classroom curriculum. I especially like the fact that there are two separate pages/activities for each word family. First, the spelling patterns are made overt to the students. Then, they must apply what they have learned to a brief, fun story. Word families help 'make sense' of spelling, increasing student confidence and competence. This book is a great resource for any K-primary classroom. It's practical, easy to use, and most of all -- it's fun for the kids.

Spiritual Diary
Published in Paperback by Baker Publications (01 January, 1980)
Author: Douglas M. Baker
Average review score:

The Spiritual Diary
This book goes way beyond the mere idea of keeping a diary, to show how a person can communicate with their Higher Self. Baker has keep his Spiritual Diary for most of his life and has gained insight that very few of us ever will, let alone in this lifetime. Actual examples from Baker's own diary are included, and his methods for unfoldment made quite clear. Keeping a Spiritual Diary is probably the most important writing any individual will prodcue in their own lifetime.

Star Struck
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Harlequin (June, 2003)
Author: Nancy Baker-Jacobs
Average review score:

Fast-Paced Mystery
When Quinn Collins, reporter and part owner of the Hollywood Star, agrees to look into the suspicious death of a friend's son, she finds herself immersed in two murders and in danger of being killed herself. You will not be able to put down this fast-paced mystery. Quinn is a gutsy, forty-something heroine who has been in Hollywood long enough to see its foibles and passions clearly. It is fun-and enlightening-to look at the entertainment industry through her eyes. I look forward to more Quinn Collins books.

Study Guide for use with Advanced Financial Accounting
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Higher Education (12 August, 1998)
Authors: Richard E. Baker, Valdean C. Lembke, and Thomas E. King
Average review score:

Clear and Concise
This was a very good study guide. I took this course via Independent Study, so it was nice to have a study guide that I could depend on. The book features a summary outline of the key concepts for each chapter along with 10 to 15 true/false questions, 10 to 20 fill-in-the-blanks, 10 to 15 multiple choice questions, and 2 to 4 excercises/problems. The fill-in-the-blanks are somewhat cheesy, but all the other types of questions make you think. There are answer keys for each chapter that even explain why the answer is what it is. The exercises/problems are good because they were usually a different scenario than what was used as an example in the textbook, so you got even more learning out of them before attempting homework problems in the text book. All in all, I recommend this study guide if you are looking for extra help with the answers available or if you are taking this course via independent study.

Successful Surgery: A Doctor's Mind-Body Guide to Help You Through Surgery
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (May, 1996)
Author: Robert W. Baker
Average review score:

Helped my emotional state tremendously!
Facing my third surgery for endometriosis, the word, "nervous," didn't begin to describe my emotional state. Dr. Baker's book (and support tapes which can be created using the script(s) in the book or ordered separately) provided the calming effect I desperately needed. I was so taken with the information presented in Dr. Baker's book, I decided to order the set of surgical support tapes which he narrates. I listened to them before, during, and after surgery. In fact, the surgery tape was played continuously during my 7-1/2 hour operation. I believe the tapes were key to my healing and recovery. I'm grateful I had the opportunity to read and listen to Dr. Baker's caring words.
